Sania Mirza, one of the most famous athletes in India, is going to end her tennis career in 2022. This means he will not be seen in court after this year.
Sania, 35, made the announcement after losing in the first round of the women’s doubles at the Australian Open. “I’ve decided this is going to be my last season,” he said. I will go on for weeks. Not sure if I can finish this season, but I want to finish.
Sania became the first Indian to win a WTA single in 2005. But the injury forced him to lean towards doubles. She won Wimbledon doubles with Swiss star Martina Hingis in 2015 and later won the US and Australian Open.
Sania was on the verge of winning a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He and Rohan Bopanna lost in the semifinals to Venus Williams and Rajiv Ram.
Sania also won two Grand Slams with Mahesh Bhupathi. She won the mixed doubles at 2009 Australian Open and the mixed doubles at the 2012 French Open.
Sania signed up for the WTA Tour in 2003. Her career-best ranking is 26, the highest ever by an Indian woman.
Sania is also a popular figure outside of tennis. India’s arch-enemy is married to Pakistani cricket star Shoaib Malik and they have a 3-year-old son at home.
